What Causes a Toothache?

September 22, 2016

If you are experiencing a toothache, it might be more than just sensitivity to hot or cold. Other things could be happening with your oral health. When you are experiencing persistent tooth pain, be sure to schedule an appointment with Dr. Roe. He can examine your mouth and determine what is going on.

Here are some of the things that can cause your tooth to hurt.

Grinding Teeth

Those that tend to grind their teeth at night can experience tension headaches, jaw pain, and toothaches. If you are grinding a lot, it could be wearing down your enamel and exposing a nerve or something else may be going on.

Infection in The Gum

Your gum line may become infected due to trapped food particles, tooth trauma, or other reasons. If you are suffering from some form of periodontitis, that will also cause you to experience pain. Gum disease can also be a culprit in the pain you are experiencing.

An Abnormal Bite

When you close your mouth, your top and bottom teeth should line up properly. If your teeth do not line up, you likely have an abnormal bite. Putting too much pressure on certain parts of your mouth can lead to pain.

Symptoms That Can Occur With Toothaches

Along with the pain you are experiencing, there can be other symptoms that occur as well. It is not uncommon to have:

  • Fever
  • Swollen gums
  • Pain when you close your teeth
  • Bad breath
  • A bad tasting discharge
  • Persistent pain
  • Hard time swallowing
  • Difficulty chewing

If you are dealing with these symptoms, you can treat them the best you can until you can get in to see Dr. Roe. It is best to call right away so that the pain does not worsen.
