The Smile-Friendly Foods You Should Consider Having this Thanksgiving

November 8, 2016

To help you and your smile have a successful and healthy Thanksgiving holiday, Dr. Jason Roe and our dental team in Dallas, Texas, have some smile-friendly food recommendations to include on your Thanksgiving menu.

The first food we recommend is cheddar cheese. Cheddar cheese lowers the levels of acid in your mouth and it also promotes saliva production. Both of these things encourage good oral health. The cheese also contains protein and calcium, which are substances that can strengthen your tooth enamel.

The second food we recommend is crunchy foods. Foods like celery, apples, and carrots can wash the plaque away from your teeth. They can also help your gums and saliva production because they contain fiber. This substance can also help wash away plaque.

The third food we recommend is leafy greens. Like cheddar cheese, leafy greens (such as spinach and kale) contain calcium, which helps promote tooth strength and health. In addition, meat, fish, and eggs provide your body with phosphorus, which is a substance that also aids your tooth enamel. These foods are also recommended.

The fourth food, or treat, we recommend is sugar-free gum. If you chew sugar-free gum, it can help wash the bacteria away from your mouth because of the saliva produced. This also helps prevent plaque from building up on the teeth.

The fifth food, or drink, actually, we recommend is milk. Consuming milk after a sugary food can neutralize the acid in the mouth that turns into plaque. The calcium in the drink can also strengthen your tooth enamel.

The sixth food we recommend is polyphenols, which is found in black and green teas. Polyphenols slow the bacterial growth that can create tooth decay and gum disease. Drinking black and green teas can also help you fight off bad breath.

As you can see, it’s possible to celebrate the holidays as well as care for your smile. If you have any questions about these tooth-healthy foods, please call Pro Dental Dallas at 972-931-1777.
