Help to Understanding Sleep Apnea

April 18, 2017

Are you familiar with sleep apnea? If not, you are not alone. Sleep apnea is a health condition and sleep disorder that is characterized by a pause or breaks in breathing while you sleep. Despite the fact that sleep apnea is common, keep in mind that it should be treated right away. The reason is, if you do not treat your sleep apnea, other health issues can arise such as heart attacks and even strokes.

There are two common forms of sleep apnea. These include central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea. Central sleep apnea is where subconscious messages from your brain and your muscles in the chest are communicating. Basically, your mind is telling your chest to breathe, but these messages are not being received. As you can see, this can be extremely serious. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airways in your body are being compromised while you sleep, which can be due to blockages or other airpipe conditions.

One thing to remember is that sleep apnea can be caused by many things: sinuses, allergies, nasal blockages, large tonsils or tongue, a deviated septum, a small windpipe, a small jaw, or even genetics. It is also known that men who are over the age of 40 are more likely to develop or show signs of sleep apnea.

Despite your form of sleep apnea, there are different treatments that could suit your unique needs. Dr. Jason Roe and our team here at Pro Dental Dallas located in Dallas, Texas, and are determined to provide you with the help and assistance you need so that your situation will be fully addressed.
