What Are The Different Types of Dentures Available?

Is There More Than One Type of Partial Dentures?

Here at NDDC, we use many different types of partials. Depending on your specific oral health needs will determine which ones we use.

Traditional Partial Dentures

The traditional type you are thinking of comes with pink acrylic gums and teeth that are also made from acrylic. It is supported by a structure made from metal.

This structure is placed over the existing teeth and the acrylic teeth fill in the gaps where the patient’s teeth is missing. In order for the false teeth to stay in place, there are clasps on the existing teeth that the structure snaps into.

On occasion, we may need to crown adjacent teeth in order to make sure they fit properly with the acrylic teeth next to it.

Claspless

These are similar to the traditional type, but it is the most aesthetically pleasing type of denture. Traditional partials will often show the metal wire when a person smiles or talks. With the claspless kind, you won’t need to worry about that.

With claspless, it gets its retention from attachments that are connected to teeth that are adjacent to the missing teeth. Often times, we will use dental implants to help keep this type of denture in place.

All Acrylic

These dentures are made entirely of acrylic- everything from the pink gum line to the teeth. Typically, these are used as a temporary solution until a patient can get to an oral surgery appointment.

What Are The Different Kinds of Full Dentures?

Just like with the partials, we offer several different types of full dentures. Each type serves a different function. Dr. Roe will do a full workup with you to determine which is best for you.

Full Mouth Dentures

These are the conventional dentures that you are familiar with. This is for those that need to have all of their teeth removed and replaced with this prosthetic. For those that use this option, the dentures are held in place on the gum line by applying denture adhesive each morning.

The prosthetic is taken out each night and cleaned in solution. Many people go with this option to restore their smile.

Immediate

Sometimes, a patient will come in our office and be in need of immediate care. We will make a set of dentures for them while they are in their appointment. If teeth have to be removed, this can provide an immediate solution until a more permanent one can be made.

Overdenture

These are appropriately named because they are designed to go over a dental implant or retained to your existing teeth.

It has a similar look to a traditional set only it stays in place much easier. We will anchor a dental implant into your jawbone that will keep this set in place. This keeps you from having to use adhesives.

Fixed

Fixed dentures are placed in your mouth in such a way that it cannot be removed by anyone other than the dentist. It is also called a hybrid because it is a cross between an implant supported bridge and a denture.

These are often used to replace missing tissue, teeth and gums. It looks similar to a dental implant, and is a great solution to restore your teeth.
