Dental Tips for Athletes

March 15, 2016

Athletes are prone to many dental issues. This is because athletes can easily harm their teeth if they are not careful. Our Pro Dental Dallas team is happy to help keep your athletic smile as healthy as possible as you enjoy your sports this spring. To help you stay safe, our team is happy to give you some great dental tips for athletes as you gear up for fun in the sun.

Mouthguards are always vital in contact sports. It is always smart to wear them during other outdoor activities like skateboarding, biking, and anything that could result in a bad fall or injury. This can help avoid getting a tooth knocked out or badly damaged in your jaw. That is why you can think of mouthguards as a guardian for your teeth.

If you decide to avoid sports drinks, then you are making a smart decision. Sports drinks contain high amounts of sugars and are very acidic. Sugars create tooth decay, which can lead to gum disease as it wears down your tooth enamel. So, it’s best to avoid drinking these when at all possible.

Dry mouth is another dental condition that can prey on an athlete. In some cases, it could be a sign of dehydration. So, it is always ideal to drink lots of water during your activities. If you don’t have enough saliva in your mouth, bacteria can begin to dwell on your teeth and gums leading to poor oral health.
