Smith, a former master plumber, started his collection of toilet seats in 2017. He began by adding decorations to the seats, including antlers. He would sometimes work until four in the morning, so that he could finish each one. The collection also grew as fans of his work began to share pieces of history with him, such as barbed wire from Auschwitz and the Berlin Wall. In addition, he has added pieces from the NASA space shuttle Challenger.

Barney’s art is a unique collection that incorporates assemblage, collage, drawing and other techniques. Many of the pieces come from his own home, including his dad, who used to mount trophy heads on plaques. A portion of his collection even includes volcanic ash from Mount St. Helens, which erupted in Washington state in 1980.
