National Dental Hygiene Month is every October, and it is a great time to remind your children of the importance of oral hygiene during the Halloween season. We understand that asking children to cut back on candy during this festive time can be a challenge. However, if you would like to minimize the amount of damage sugary treats and sweets can cause to their teeth, our staff here at Pro Dental Dallas is happy to give you some tips on getting them through the season with their teeth in good shape.
Sticky candies or candy that takes a lot of chewing are one of the worst things you can do to your teeth. They cling to tooth enamel and cause cavities. They can also get stuck deep in your teeth, along the gumline, and inside braces. Candies that are popular (and sticky) include tootsie rolls, caramel, taffy, Skittles, and even gummy candy, and of course, anything sour!
Hard candies are actually better for your teeth as long as they are not chewed or the kind that takes a lot of biting. If it is a sucking candy, that could be better, however, the sugar in them can still damage to teeth. The best candy for your child’s smile is soft chocolate candies. These are great because they melt more in the mouth and won’t do as much damage to teeth.
